How Can severe Heel Pain Be Treated?

My heels hurt all the time. It started in October, and it is both heels. I have difficulty walking, especially in the morning. It is very painful, and I can not walk or jog any more. I have never had any trouble with my feet in my life. It feels like they are very bruised, and they haven't shown any improvement, even with gel inserts.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello.
Thanks for trusting Healthcaremagic!
I have gone through your query and I can understand your concerns.

Probable diagnosis:- plantar fascitis.

The short description you have provided suggest a clinical condition called "plantar fascitis". Its quite common in middle aged population and many effective treatment options are available.

I suggest you to consult an orthopedician and get the following things done:-
(1). A detailed physical examination and history is needed to make a diagnosis of plantar fascitis.
(2). blood investigations like CBC,ESR, CRP (C reactive protein),RF (rheumatoid factor) and uric acid may be needed to rule out other conditions causing heel pain as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid and gout.
(3). An X-ray foot AP and oblique view to rule minor fracture and contusions.
Treatment options include both surgical and non surgical.
(1). As a first line option you can try analgesics like "ibuprofen" or "diclofenac". Recurrence of symptoms is a problem with analgesics.
(2). Corticosteroid injections to the heel used for cases of plantar fasciitis refractory to analgesics. It can provide symptom free interval for up to three months.
(3).Extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) can be tried in cases which fails to conservative measures
(4). Surgical methods like plantar fasciotomy may be required as a last resort in rare cases.

You can also try the following home remedies and life style changes to control pain.
(1). Apply ice packs over the affected heel.
(2).Try not to walk or run on hard surfaces.
(3). Try to lose weight if you are obese. Obesity is an important risk factor for plantar fascitis.
Plantar fascitis shows good response with treatment but It may take a few months to a year for complete recovery.

Hope i have answered your query.
Wishing you good health.

Regards.
